Reflection on Week Two
My action research plan is looking into new strategies to improve grades and prevent failures of frequently absent students. When discussing possible action research topics with my site supervisor, he suggested looking into our current campus culture. This principal felt that when there is a sense of belonging and pride, there is
a willingness to try. Upon further discussion, we felt there might be a connection between
this our current climate and the topic I ended up choosing. I think there is a link between a negative school culture and poor student attendance. I find this very disheartening. This is an opportunity for me to positively impact my those students who I have direct contact with in my classroom and extra curricular responsibilities. This action research project is already bring up more questions to ponder!

Your research plan is very interesting. It is very hard to conduct a school when the atmosphere feels very negative. Finding different opportunities to grasp the students attention to come to school everyday will be a bit hard, but I know that you will be able to accomplish this by finding things or items that the students are interested in. Wish you lots of luck on your research.
ReplyDeleteIs your research going to focus on whether there is a negative culture at your campus? How will you measure whether the climate is positive or negative? I'm asking because I feel exactly the same way about my campus and am looking for ways to improve school spirit and buy in to the school. It seems like you have a great idea to improve the school and now need to find a way to measure and improve. Maybe you could look at student involvement in clubs, sports, etc. and see if it improves with time or whether the students in those thing have better grades than the non-involved kids.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, I'm John Bradshaw. I'm in Ed 5301 and my blogpsot is http://jebwvhs.blogspot.com/
DeleteYour plan sounds similar to mine. I am looking at how SES affects student absences. After all absences affect grades in the long run. With your research, your goal is going to have to be to get those bodies in the seats because if they arent there they can't learn.
